PLAY IT SAFE THIS SUMMER

We welcome you to explore local trails and parks this summer, but please do so within your personal and physical limits.

Central Washington is a spacious landscape with diverse terrain, making it difficult to reach someone in need of aid quickly. Taking unnecessary risks can put you and others in danger, so please be cautious of where you choose to explore. Our area has plenty of hikes, rides, and waters requiring varying degrees of skill, so there’s always an option within your comfort zone available. Above all, use common sense. If you feel like you’re doing something wrong, you probably are.

Before you venture outdoors in Central Washington this season, review these additional ways to play it safe during your upcoming summer adventure:

01.

Know your limits, equipment, and the area, and be wise about how you engage in your activity.

02.

Choose lower-risk activities and understand safety guidelines.

03.

If you are going out on your own, always tell someone where you are going and when you will return.

04.

If venturing out with a group, consider the ability level of everyone, including dogs, if you bring one. Let the slowest person in your party set the pace.

05.

Bring emergency supplies. This includes a first aid kit, map, compass, flashlight, warm clothing, high-energy food, water, and insect repellent.

06.

Wear sunglasses and a hat or visor.

07.

Bring sunscreen and remember to reapply!

08.

Before starting out, do warm-up exercises. Stretching gradually increases heart rate, temperature, and circulation to your muscles.

09.

Watch out for bugs. Avoid attracting stinging insects by wearing light-colored clothing and avoiding perfumes or colognes.

10.

Beware when encountering wildlife. Wild animals are unpredictable and can be dangerous, so never attempt to feed or approach them. Use a flashlight to warn away the animals feeding at night.

11.

Think about your footing while traveling on steep trails. Trails aren’t as solid in
the spring due residual snow melt and trees and bushes can’t always be trusted
to hold you.

12.

Bring more water and food than you think you’ll need.

13.

Be weather wise. The spring season can bring unpredictable weather, so be sure
to keep an eye on current and predicted weather conditions and carry appropriate
clothing, such as a rain jacket or extra pair of socks.

14.

Know what to do if you get lost. Here are some tips:
• Try to locate your position on a map.
• Be sure to carry a compass and know how to use it!
• Collect your thoughts and attempt to remember how you got to your
current location.
• Stay on the trail!
• Recall any landmarks such as bodies of water, peaks, or unique formations
you passed.
